Stopped for a late lunch - 3pm during the week so it was empty except for one man sitting at the bar. We sat at a table by the window and ordered a couple drinks while looking at the menu. Good items on a pretty extensive menu. Husband ordered the Guiness Stew - which he loves and it's his go to food when at a pub. He loved it - I had a taste and it was really good. My go to food at a pub is usually Fish & Chips - which I ordered here and it looked like it was going to be good but it was disappointing - it was mostly batter and little fish. Tartar sauce was not offered - I had to ask for malt vinegar and the fries were dark and mushy. The cole slaw was a generous portion but it had no flavor and it was kind of dry. We may go back though only because there were so many items to try and the board showed lots of drink deals for different days of the week.

Such a shame This could be such an awesome place for pub friendly folks to hang out. Unfortunately it is a place where college kids get to act like the over privaledge idiots there parents have taught them to be. During our most recent visit (on quiz night) the bar staff were nice the beers good, the food also good, but the college kids (Chocolate Starfish) proceeded to try to to dominate the bar and cheat uding their cell phones all way through. The quiz master knew it, the bar staff knew it, everyone in the bar knew it but nothing was done. We'll fair enough, but we shouldn't reward them with prizes, oh opps! As if that wasn't enough the college kids them tried to intimidate my wife and I as we were leaving, shouting abuse and trying to initiate an altacation. Which again the staff did nothing about. Unfortunately thus ended what was possibly a good experience in to a nightmare. I wouldn't go back there if you paid me.

Have been on a little tour with my father in law in search of the best cheeseburger in the area. This waa our second stop out of seven and so far, in my opinion, nothing has come close. The burger is juicy and has tremendous flavor and the fresh cut fries (sans old bay) are outstanding. I have been there once more with dad and twice more with the family (and not dad) and they enjoy it as well. Have only eaten in the bar area and not seen the upstairs yet but I assume that is a little more kid friendly. Btw for those keeping score at home I personally have declared this place home of the best burger around but for dad search continues.

This place is delicious. Their French fries and burgers are yum! The nachos are the best !! You should all try!

Come here for lunch a good amount. LOVE the sirachi burger! Fries are also super good as well- never had bad food. The only downfall was that we went during lunch and the woman who was working only knew how to make one mixed drink. Besides that, I would recommend the Grog to anyone!

I'm very split on the Grog. Its very close to my house and gets a ton of good reviews by people I know. My first dinner at the grog was fantastic. The wrap I had was made perfectly. The manager was very attentive and the staff was great. The 2nd trip was on a monday night and i had the same wrap which was not good at all and the waitress was bleh but I decided to give it another shot on a busier night. I had dinner there with 3 friends the following Friday. The wrap I ordered was bad again and the french fries were not good. The rest of my table agreed the food seemed old at that shouldn't be an issue at 8 PM on a Friday night Because of the proximity to my house and the fact that my first trip was fantastic i am going to give the Grog another shot.

Good for big groups, and on game night--big TV's. Service was friendly, but very slow, especially considering a big group wanted our table for the better TV. Food, overall, was very good. Service was accomodating--some people wanted to make a burger veggie instead of meat. My California wrap was very good, as were the fries. Highly recommend any of the burgers as well.

When we hit there it was Mid afternoon and we had missed the time for where we were trying to eat, so we rolled the chance and stepped into the long established Grog. While I currently am a teatotaller , the Bride and Joy availed herself of the bar and had a delightful Cosmo, which the bartender was careful to give her the entire drink holding the mixing tin aside until she was ready. We availed ourselves of the kitchens offerings and She had their Crock of French Onion soup which came enrobed in cheese with a wonderfully rich broth and perfectly toasted crouton of bread floated in it. I had their chicken pot pie with a perfect blend of vegetables and meat in a delightful white cream gravy, topped with a lovely layer of puff pastry on top. David the barman who served us, kept my water and iced tea topped up and was delightful to deal with. All in all, a delightful meal to thaw out to...

I'll start by saying, my boyfriend and I love dive bars. The Grog is a good dive without being too "dive-ey", as in, we order food there and it doesn't taste like a dirty fryer and the floors aren't sticky. Great bar food and all the bartenders are hot and friendly. We've always gotten great service here. It's pretty awesome that we are in walking distance to this place. The Grog is for sure the best bar in town, at least for our type of crowd. We aren't college student age but we're still young enough to enjoy a good bar. Fridays and Saturday nights are usually crowded (Not insane like Kelly's though), but what do you expect in a college town? Try an old fashioned made by Lauren and the sesame soy wings.

Used to love this place but it has REALLY gone to the garbage! Went here last week with my boyfriend and the waitress messed up our order we felt bad so we just asked for to go bags. She then decided to give us attitude and threw the check book at me. I asked for the manager and he came over and got into my boyfriends face . Never coming back here again!!!!

"The Grog" has too many awesome food items to name, but all the food I've tasted there is amazing! The staff were helpful and even gave me a drink on the house since I had driven 4 hours to have lunch there (a friend who lives locally had taken me there before and it was so good that I stopped there before doing anything in Philly)

I know its really more a bar, than a restaurant, but if you're looking for Irish food based on their "Grog Faire" menu, then do yourself a favor and skip it entirely. The so-called Shepherds pie I had was really more of a vegetable stew with sprinkles of ground beef and a very thin layer of mashed potato and barely any beef taste. Certainly not the shepherd's pie I've had with more of a lasagna/pastichio consistency than a stew consistency. The waitress seemed more than happy to take it back and substitute something else, so I asked for something far less ambitious...a double cheeseburger, medium-rare. What I got: Two weirdly shaped patties that look like one pac-man shape and one egg shape. RAW-to-very-rare on the inside, although a touch scorched at the top of one patty. The manager tried to make it right by offering a free dessert or drinks, but since my dining companion doesnt drink, the whisky-sauce-laden dessert didn't cut it. I asked that he take off my companion's entree at least, but he couldn't do that according to "policy". And he mentioned that something was said to the "cook" about his burger attempt. Another issue: The Shrimp Le Grog is described as:Succulent black tiger shrimp wrapped in crispy bacon and served with horseradish aioli. We did get the following: 5 distinctly non-tiger-sized shrimp wrapped in bacon that was DEEP-FRIED to the point of dryness (I will admit that it was crispy). Some horseradish dressing, maybe it was a base ranch, but certainly not an "aioli" The menu tries to sound impressive and vivid in its descriptions. Maybe the original cook who wrote it had some culinary skill, but the guy today apparently never read the menu on what was being offered and what they are supposed to be delivering. But skipping all that, the half-assed attempt at creating burger patties and cooking them in such a fashion is an utter joke, especially since the interior of the burger could be seen when plated on the bun. My companion did like her burger and the fries, but I wound up leaving disappointed and hungry.

First time here... It's a bar. The French Onion Soup is good. I got the meatloaf and my two meager pieces of meatloaf came dry, no gravy! The mashed potatoes were okay. The mashed potatoes were also sans gravy. The heaping pile of fancy vegetables dwarfed my meatloaf. They looked healthy, hot, ample, and fancy. I'm sure some young millennial would have enjoyed them. Unfortunately, I came for the meatloaf and it sucked! Next time I'll get bar food. You would be wise to do the same.

The food is above average, but isn't amazing. I am never disappointed with my meals. I love drinking at this bar too. It just has a nice feel to it. I've never had any problems with the bartenders or wait staff. Most food is brought out quickly. This is just a great pub with great food.

I've been there several times and liked there burgers. Last night though my fiancee and I stopped in, and it was her first time. The burgers came out underdone. The Frech fries were simply disgusting. The bartender told us they recently switched to "boardwalk fries." I don't remember boardwalk fries as limp, cold and dripping in grease. My burger was just OK and my fiancees she said was downright lousy. Not going back.

2 things: First, the peppers and onions in my fajitas were burnt, and my husband's Reuben was cold in the center. Second, what's up with the manger making the staff conduct a bar clean in front of a full bar?

  • Mike M.

There might not be anything that's over-the-moon extraordinary about The Grog, but it does pretty much everything well. The food is good, the atmosphere is warm, and the drink selection should satisfy anyone. You can order a Coors Lite, a craft beer, a whiskey and coke with well whiskey, a high end single malt, or a complicated cocktail. And, the bartender won't act bothered whichever way you go. The prices at The Grog are also pretty reasonable. There are several other bars nearby, a couple of which are also pretty good. But, if you're looking for a simple neighborhood bar that's clean and comfortable, The Grog is it.

Came here at 10 on a Saturday night with a friend for a drink. Atmosphere was nice, bartenders were friendly, good beers on tap - my only complaint is that when the DJ started playing music, it was so loud that I couldn't hear myself think. There just weren't enough people in the bar to justify the ear-splitting volume. The music itself was on point, however.

Terrible experience!! We loved the quaint look of Bryn Mawr, and The Grog jumped out at us because it seemed to be exactly what we were searching for. Great looking menu, etc. All was well until it took over 45 minutes to receive our food. The restaurant was not at all crowded, and the bartender, GP was avoiding our table, as it was taking entirely too long to receive our order. Finally, we were running late to the airport due to this extra delay, so we had to have everything boxed to-go. Leaving with over $50 of food in to-go boxes makes you realize that it's definitely not worth your time or money. Try out some other restaurant in Bryn Mawr and get more than average bar food.

My parents love the Grog! It has a fun atmosphere and I really like sitting in the booths upstairs. They also have the buffalo wing special where on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, its 50 cents per wing. I couldn't get over that I got 30 wings for $15... good deal! And the Sesame Soy glazed wings are delicious! They are very sweet. I'd have to say, aside from their wings, this place is kind of so- so... I really wanna give them 3 stars, but the wing special is really good and the sesame soy glaze is the best I've ever had on buffalo wings... Plus, this is kind of my dad's comfort... we go here for lunch when he feels like bonding...

Both times that I have eaten here, the food has been incredible. Best burgers around and the service is great!

  • John L.

Holy crap, could we stop for a second and just reflect on what they're offering here? I mean 50 cents wings, and I think like 1.50 or 2.00 Coors Light? I'm sorry, I'm sure we're all picky eaters, and genuine aficionados of fine dining. But if you don't like this kind of place there is something wrong with you. Like literally something deep rooted, festering & pestering, and disgustingly wrong with you. I mean if you open up a person who doesn't like the Grog you'd probably find a miniature alien version of Richard Simmons controlling the person from some awkward alien cockpit. Also try the Hot Beef au Jus, and ask for horseradish sauce. I mean if that doesn't make you happy, then you're hopeless. Plus all the bartenders and waiter/waitresses are extremely nice and helpful in every way. But again won't act like you're their best friend in the whole world!

A great old bar on the Mainline. It's got that Irish pub feel. The bar with a few tables is on the first floor and there is an additional dining room on the second. Both floors are small but it's nice to have the separate second floor room. The food is several notches above bar food. I'd call it gastro pub level. I actually think most folks will be surprised by the quality of the food. The portions are substantial. A great burger with fries goes for about $9. Shepard's Pie is $12. There are other entrees that go up over $20. The variety is really high for a pub. This is also a place to go for interesting beers. If you are a craft beer guy or gal you will be reasonably pleased. Try the happy hour. Lots of locals having a great time.

Only one in the bar at 2pm. The 24 year old Mgr stated the cook "dropped my burger and is making another one". Took 40mins to make another one? 2 stars for the comp'd beer.

Went here for st. patty's day! Wanted that whole irish feel, this was the closest thing we found. Got green beer, it was huge & only $3 :) As we were leaving a bunch of college students walked in for the whole sweet sixteen basketball game. Before than it was families at a pub/bar with little kids eating and it was like $8. I got a philly cheese steak because when in philly get a philly cheese steak duhh! It was okay only ate half a little to greasy for me. My cousin got a burger and at the whole thing, she said it was yummy. Will def go here again for drinks because that bud light I got was $3 and was equivalent to maybe 2.5 glasses so cheap! Food was descent price under $10.

Fantastic fries. Friendly service. Cozy, casual atmosphere. Sure, this Main Line stalwart seems to attract an older crowd (40+) at times. But the comfortable atmosphere, decent beer selection, and standard -- but well executed -- pub fare make The Grog a neighborhood gem. The chicken fingers can't be beat: the perfect marriage of golden brown crunch and tender meat. The turkey burger is average. The real can't-miss is the French fries. Crispy, with a hint of a crunchy coating, and perfectly salted...they could be a meal in themselves! If you're looking for a place to grab a drink, watch a game, or have a very casual meal with friends, this is the place to go in Bryn Mawr.

My S.O. and I had been frequenting The Grog maybe once or twice a week for a couple of months. It seemed like the perfect bar in the area for us. Casual, clean with decent food & friendly bartenders. It quickly became our go to place and we looked forward to our visits there. One evening at the Grog, my better half ordered a tenderloin steak salad. She ordered it medium rare. It arrived well done. She very politely alerted the bartender who was more than gracious and understanding about the situation. She went to the kitchen and requested new steak, cooked as requested. What arrived was basically cow sushi. Red, cold center. It had barely touched a grill. The cook messed up...but instead of just cooking the order properly, like they should have done initially, they decided to turn it into basically a grudge match...and an insult. Believe me, it wasn't lost on us. I asked my girl if she wanted to go to the Grog the other day, she said "I'm over it since they messed up my steak last time. Fuck them." It's not a reflection on the ownership, bartenders or waitstaff. This would have been a four star review prior to this incident. One dickhead of a cook can ruin it for an otherwise decent establishment. Oh well, your loss.

First of all Food is OK! But I liked their ambiance and the service we got around here. Yes the food is bit pricey, but you have a quite atmosphere and a better service than the bars around here. I would highly recommend to anyone for a weekday or weekend night out.

My Cobb Salad last night was fantastic, and my husband said that the steak in his steak salad was "melt-in-your-mouth" steak. The couple we were with liked their food (potato skins and Greek salad). Our server was a good server. I just wish I lived closer to The Grog Grill because that was the best salad I've ever eaten in my 60 years here on planet earth!

My friend and I needed a place to eat before we attended the Bryn Mawr Film Institutes Sing-a-long Wizard of Oz, so, we saw the menu posted outside and decided to give it a whirl. Now, it was crowded with local folks having dinner and happy hour, but, we were served very quickly. the menu seems reasonable, with Wraps,Hot Sandwiches,Panini's, Irish traditional fare and Pastas. We both ordered hot sandwiches: I ordered a Chicken Cheese Steak which is actually a chicken breast chopped with American cheese and fried onions. I added mushrooms. Very delicious. My friend had a craving for Corned Beef Sandwich because she had a delicious one on vacation in Maine. Said it was really good. Both Sandwiches comes with fries. Good pub grub and a fairly wide selection of beers. The bathroom was clean as was the whole establishment. Now I know I can come back when I need a quick meal before/after attending a movie at BMFI.

I'd growl a little when my friends wanted to go out to the Grog on a weekday night. During the day, it's a regular ol' pub on Lancaster serving greasy pub food and various beers on tap. At night, I guess it's still a regular ol' pub-- but it's so tiny and dark and the music is so loud, I don't understand the reason behind being there, other than to mope over the depressing realities of Bryn Mawr, PA.

I am sorry I get excited when a place has cider. so many places don't! I have been to this spot about 3 times, each time trying the wings, or one of the specials. I have even stopped by while waiting with friends prior to catching the train. Low key, filled with happy regulars, its a great place to drop by.....

Just went to The Grog for the first time last night, and I'm not planning on going back anytime soon. As soon as we sat down, our waitress treated us with an attitude that seemed to suggest we were wasting her time and this attitude persisted throughout the evening, as if we were an inconvenience. She also continually forgot to bring things to the table that we requested numerous times, such as water and napkins. As for the food, the menu seemed to be trying to do too many types of pub fare, so that the individual dishes suffered. The appetizers we ordered (bruschetta and calamari) were subpar versions of what they could have been, and the burger a friend of mine ordered did not seem like anything special given the price. In terms of atmosphere, my friends and I didn't have a problem. Typical pub feel. Overall though, the poor service really turned me off from here as an eatery. I can only imagine going to get a drink at the bar in the future, but with the other options on the Mainline, they'd have to have one hell of a special to bring me back.

Four stars for '80s music...because who DOESN'T love some Michael Jackson and Biggie? ...otherwise, it's just a conventional pub on the mainline with quintessential beers, read Stella, etc... Come here for wooden seats, chatty pub-goers, and a very comfortable-down-home experience.

Best bar food on the Mainline, hands down. Their Grog burger is the stuff of dreams, the French onion soup is delish, the beef dip is great...and the fries. Never been disappointed, love it!

Solid bar food. The nachos are a huge portion, as in for 4 people! Burger is good and I love the sasame salad dressing. Sheppards pie and meatloaf also worth checking out. Good place to watch a game.

I used to eat at The Grog back in 2000-2001. They have, hands down, the best French Onion soup I've ever had. All my friends who I've eaten there with agree. It's the best. Period. It's worth going here just to order the French Onion soup. One of the other reviewers mentioned not liking it. This is insanity.

Went here for happy hour with a friend I haven't seen in 21 years. It was close to where my cousin lived and so we were scanning Lancaster where we can sit, have a drink and nosh on appetizers. To say the least, she stopped here. It's quite the pub hangout spot for locals. I ordered the artichoke dip while my friend had the french onion soup and salad here. She wasn't too impressed with the french onion soup and asked to take it away and our server was happy to take it off the bill. Which I thought was really nice of her and she also asked if my friend wanted something else from the kitchen. I thought she handled this situation well. I was just happy to have my first Guinness in Philly.

The Grog is a good "Where everybody knows your name" kind of bar in the middle of Suburbia. It has a lot of great drinks specials ($2 Red Bull and Vodkas on Monday nights as the previous review said!). It's also has the perfect Happy Hour atmosphere. It also has tasty food that is worth checking out. It's also close to plenty of universities, restaurants, and The Bryn Mawr Film Institute. which makes it an incredibly ideal suburban watering hole.

Up front need to tell you that this is my Cheers so I may be a tad prejudice. This is a great local bar that will give you a good pour, has a decent # of beers on tap and plenty of liquor choices. I've always been a fan of the food. The burgers, wings and sandwiches are fine and I'm also a fan of the full dinners with the meatloaf and chicken pot pie being two of my favorites (both are great values for the money). Try to get one of the booths looking out over Lancaster Ave on the second floor ... that's the best place to give you a feel more of a resteraunt vs. a bar. A lot of the rest of the seating makes you feel like you are in a bar ... which you are!

  • Emily P.

Oh, the Grog. So many sketchy nights began here. More than once, a member of my party exposed herself at the bar. ...which is not to say I didn't have normal nights here, either. Most of my experiences here were normal and clean, like the bar itself. Often they involved the Grog's awesome food (check out the wings!) and equally awesome beer selection (which is not kind on a college student's wallet, though not unreasonable). It's a good place to meet up with friends or have a business lunch (it's much less sketchy by day.) A final word of caution: watch out for the leering men - there's an ass-grabber among them.

The Grog (formerly Mallory's) is an upscale 2 story bar and restaurant in Bryn Mawr right on Lancaster Avenue. The food at the Grog is probably some of the best that I have ever had. The Grog burger is the best! Definitely a must try! The filet mignon salad is pretty awesome too as well as the shepherd's pie. There is a full bar with a wide selection of international beer and liquor. Service is average but friendly. You will wait a while for your entree if the restaurant is busy so come prepared. The service was good upfront but after the entrees were served we were wondering if our waitress went home. Upstairs is nonsmoking until 9 pm. The decor is pretty plain but remember that it is a bar and because of that it is pretty small. Good food, comfortable atmosphere, clean, but not always consistent.

Good pub food, decent beer selection both on draugh and in bottles. Priced fairly and the portion sizes are good. I've been a few times over the years and I'll definitely be back.

the grog was my favorite bar during college. while slightly pricey, i loved the atmosphere and the bartenders. the burgers and fries are god's foods. the drinks are nice and strong. and the owner, billy, is my hero. billy once paid for every drink that my friends and i had over the course of 4 hours on a sunday no less. the birthday girl's level of drunkenness is legendary. to the point where the said birthday girl was outside the bar sleeping on the pavement with a huge grin on her face right around closing time. you cant beat that. go to the grog for food and the company of the staff. a fun game to play there is: "guess the bryn mawr students" amongst the horde of villanovans.

Not a Big Fan... The Grog seems like a place I would like... its a bit Divey, kinda small regular bar food and beers etc.. I have friends who would go here over everywhere else but I just don't get it... My girlfriend used to go to Villanova and this place was in walking distance from her apartment so we went by default a lot of times... I got on a martini kick for awhile and now that I live in NYC I cannot believe that still to this day the most expensive Martini I have ever had was at ... THE GROG!!!???/ WTF?? there have also been a couple time there has been some shadiness with the bill, etc., etc. I'm not making any accusations or anything like that., i would just assume it was my mistake, I'm just saying something didn't quite add up more than once. Food is decent, nachos were soggy and not very good - its a pet peeve of mine when I ask if its real melted cheese on nachos or "nacho cheese" and a server says real cheese and then the nachos are covered and soaking in nacho cheese... I don't get it, not a huge Grog fan.. to each his own I guess!

My friends and I once affectionately referred to The Grog as "the place where old men come to leer". It's your typical sports bar, but the food is pretty good and the portions are huge -- I recommend the hummus. However, The Grog truly won me over when I went there to celebrate finishing my senior thesis -- I'm a fan of any place that serves $2 Red Bull and vodkas (after 9 on Monday nights, y'all!)

I stopped here with my boyfriend because we thought the name was hilarious and we were in the mood for a treat. We ordered the Artichoke & Crab Dip and it was fabulous. I scraped the bowl clean! Service, however, was very slow. This place is more of a bar than a restaurant, but we were there for over an hour just for one round of appetizers. I'd like to return here at night. The chalkboard near the bar showed some very good deals on drinks, and several musicians lined up for the weekend. Seems like a nice little spot if you're not in a hurry.

Love this place! The sliders were very tasty and really hit the spot. The nAchos had great flavorful and the best part they gave you enough chips to topping ratio which many people don't do. This place is just great and worth a visit and I will defiantly be back!
